Arissa, My Little Water Baby (Mermaid Baby)

This is a Korean drama inspired post – The Legend of the Blue Sea.

Arissa was born to love water. Although she is born in the year of fire monkey, I think she is actually a water monkey. Her first bath when she was born was at the hospital and I didn’t get to see her reaction.  When Aunty Lee, our confinement lady bathe her, she was so calm and composed! Aunty Lee told us that Arissa is one baby that loves bathing and water.

Bearing that in mind, we started introducing her to “swimming” when she was 2 months old! I put “swimming” because it was just the bathtub in our home. We filled it up with water, then sit inside with her. Water kind of soothe her.

During confinement period, she will cry or make noise right around her bathing time. Once, she feels the water, she calms down. I am not joking. Even now when she is cranky (at 6 months old), we bring her to the bathroom and listening to the running water from the tap makes her stop!

During the 2nd and 3rd month, we will play with Arissa in the bathtub (only 5 to 10 mins) before bathing her at least once a week. When she was 4 months old, we introduced her to the swimming pool.

Still alot of holding required at 4 month old. No individual photos of her.

I highly recommend the swim trainers float that I am using to all mommies. I feel that it is better for babies, rather than the neck floats that supports the head/neck. Also maybe because Arissa is on the bigger side, her neck is quite “fat” so I am afraid that the neck floats won’t be able to fit her. Nevertheless, which ever float you choose, make sure that there is an adult with your baby at all times.

Arissa enjoyed her swimming session in the pool. The water was a bit cold but we only stayed for about 15 minutes. To be very honest, we took almost 1 hour to prepare her for the pool. This included – blowing the float, feeding her first so that she is in a good mood and making sure she has done her business before we put her in the swim diapers. Of course, mommy and daddy also need to get ready for the pool. However, seeing her having fun and enjoying herself made it all worth it.  Note: You can purchase the swim trainers from Lazada

When she was 5 months old, I saw a lot of promo on Hippopo Baby Spa. I decided to give it a try as it was in Empire Shopping Center which was convenient for us. The promo was RM68 for 1 hour (40 mins swimming + 20 mins massage).

The tub was a bit too small for her. She could actually reach the bottom of the tub!

First 5 minutes was awkward and she weren't really enjoying. But after that, she was kicking away in the tub.

My verdict based on my experience for Hippopo Baby Spa: 6/10

The good stuff:

  • Staff there are well trained and very friendly. You feel warm and at home the moment you walk into the place.
  • They have a nice baby room for mom to nurse baby before, after or during their session.
  • If your baby loves water and you don’t have pool or a bathtub at home, this is the place to go to expose them to swimming.
  • They have a dedicated nurse that will attend to your baby so you feel more at ease. The nurse will also be in-charge of massaging your baby.

The not so great:

  • They determine which “pool” you use depending on baby’s age. As Arissa was below 6 months old, they put her in the small individual pool that looks like Jacuzzi tub . It was a bit too small for her as she was longer than an average 5 months old baby. Even when she started to have fun after 10 minutes, she couldn’t move around too much. She was still confined in that small area.
  • Although the advertisement says 1 hour, it was Arissa’s first time so instead of 40 minutes, she was only allowed in the pool for 30 minutes. As for the 20 minutes massage session, it probably ended within 10 minutes.
  • For the massage session, they will ask if you want to pay extra for them to use some organic massage oil. As I was a kiamsiap (meaning stingy in hokkien) mom, I declined. Arissa’s skin was quite sensitive and she ended up having rashes on her stomach and back!

Well, one good thing we learnt from Hippopo Baby Spa was that, we can just let Arissa enjoy swimming at the convenience of our own home! This was taken recently and she now gets her dose of swimming lesson once every week!

She is big enough to be in the pool on her own now!

We really need to start sending her for real swimming lessons soon!

Note: Adult supervision still required. Never leave your baby unattended.
